Suicide: Second Leading Cause of Death in 15- to 29-Year-Olds

Analysis by Dr. Joseph Mercola

September 26, 2019

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15- to 29-year-olds, second only to road injuries. Every year, nearly 800,000 people die by suicide, mostly in low- and middle-income countries, where self-poisoning with pesticides is common. Suicide is also on the rise in high-income countries.  read more>>>  https://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2019/09/26/suicide-second-leading-cause-death-among-15-29.aspx?utm_source=dnl&utm_medium=email&utm_content=art2HL&utm_campaign=20190926Z1&et_cid=DM353569&et_rid=716057397

Flu Shot Fails to Protect Seniors and May Increase Miscarriages

Analysis by Dr. Joseph Mercola

What's the Best Way to Use a Standing Desk?

Analysis by Dr. Joseph Mercola

September 27, 2019

The standing desk trend may have been driven by hopes it would help you burn more energy, but research finds the increase is negligible. Additionally, prolonged stationary standing may be as challenging as sitting. Sit-to-stand desks offer more benefits as they promote greater movement throughout the day, thus supporting health and wellness.  read more>>> https://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2019/09/27/best-way-to-use-standing-desk.aspx?utm_source=dnl&utm_medium=email&utm_content=art2HL&utm_campaign=20190927Z1&et_cid=DM353603&et_rid=716734958

Vaccine Exemptions Under Attack in 2019

September 27, 2019

 Story at-a-glance

  • In 2010, the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) launched the NVIC Advocacy Portal, a free online vaccine choice advocacy network, for the purpose of securing and defending informed consent protections in vaccine policies and laws
  • During the 2019 legislative session, 22 bills across 17 states were filed to attempt to eliminate vaccine exemptions. Three bills passed, 12 died and seven are still pending in California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin
  • While media hyped bills attacking exemptions, there were almost as many bills to expand informed consent rights as there were to eliminate or restrict those rights. This can be directly credited to positive action taken by forward-thinking state legislators given fact-based information about vaccines, exemptions and diseases by concerned citizens who took the time to make one-on-one personal contact with their elected representatives
  • Of the 137 vaccine-related bills NVIC opposed, only 18 bad bills passed
  • It is critical that vaccine choice advocates in every state register for and check in to the NVIC Advocacy Portal. The most important thing you can do is to establish relationships with and educate your legislators now and into next year so you can be ready to counter bills that will restrict or eliminate exemptions and get good bills filed to protect and expand vaccine exemptions  read more>>>https://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2019/09/27/vaccine-exemption-laws-are-under-close-scrutiny.aspx?utm_source=dnl&utm_medium=email&utm_content=art1HL&utm_campaign=20190927Z1&et_cid=DM353603&et_rid=716734958

The Dating Game: The Ins and Outs of Expiration Dating for Natural Products

Tuesday, 16 July 2019 23:05 By Kristen Schepker, Assistant Editor   Dating Game

Expiration dates, "use by" guidelines, or "manufactured on" notices are printed on the labels of nearly all consumable products nowadays. When it comes to dietary supplements, who determines those dates––and what do they really mean?
What's In A Date?
"Typically, the responsible party is the one listed as the manufacturer or distributor on the label of the dietary supplement product," said Andrew Shao, Interim Senior Vice President of Scientific and Regulatory Affairs at the Council for Responsible Nutrition. Manufacturers use stability studies––a series of experiments exposing a product to a range of different storage conditions––to inform their expiration date calculations.

Stability testing enables researchers to examine products when stored under ideal conditions––in the dark, at room temperature and low humidity, generally––as well as more extreme circumstances, like those that might occur during shipping and transport. Shao noted that supplement makers often use a combination of "accelerated" methods--where products are exposed to extreme conditions for a short period of time--and "real time" studies, in which the products are exposed to more normal conditions. In both cases, analytical chemists track any changes in quality that occur over a designated period.

Quality Assurance for Hemp CBD: Key Questions to Ask

Tuesday, 27 August 2019 20:03      Hemp CBDBy Erik Goldman, Editor in Chief

Quality assurance is a challenge for all herbal companies. An increasingly globalized supply chain, economically-motivated adulteration, environmental contaminants, and limitations of analytical methods are just a few key issues that quality control managers must face.
For companies making hemp extracts, the challenges are compounded by a confusing regulatory landscape, the inherent complexity of the plant, the surging consumer demand for CBD, and the entrance of dozens of upstart brands with no prior herbal experience and little understanding of basic QA methods.
Responsible and ethical brands struggle to differentiate themselves amid a sea of competitors.

Product quality begins with total control of the company’s raw materials  read more>>> https://holisticprimarycare.net/topics/topics-h-n/herbal-medicine/2072-quality-assurance-for-hemp-cbd-key-questions-to-ask.html

Choice, Chance, and Signs of Gratitude

By                                   Expert Author Liah Howard

"Start each day with a grateful heart" is printed on a wooden sign that was given to me by a friend. I have that inspiring message hanging on the wall opposite my bed. I am reminded first thing in the morning to be grateful. Such a simple instruction yet sometimes, very hard to do. My mind is quick to fill with duties of the day and sometimes a reluctance to leave the warmth of my cozy bed. Yet, if I can shift my attention from activity and instead tap into an inner gratitude for the mere fact that I am alive, then each breath becomes a sacred gift. Earlier this year, I had a close brush with death and can say first hand that I no longer take for granted the blessing of being alive.
Perhaps the universe needed to startle me back into an attitude of gratitude. The time was 7:15 pm on Sept 23rd when death brushed by me. I was walking across the road with friends in a crosswalk by the beach after a birthday celebration for my friend Shaun. I was the last one in the group when I suddenly heard a shout from across the street. "Liah! Look out!" Then suddenly as if instinctually, my friend Patricia who was walking in front of me, grabbed my arm and pulled me forward out of the path of a speeding red car. I was wearing a black dress on that dark night and the driver did not see me at all. The car hit the back of my dress and left an indelible memory in my mind of the shiny red hood that almost robbed me of my life.
The driver was shaken up and pulled over on the side of the road, apparently, he heard the shouts of my friends as they screamed when he passed. I was hyperventilating and my body shook from the intensity of the situation. I couldn't speak or process. I was overwhelmed with shock and fear. I couldn't believe the magnitude of what had just happened. Had my friend Shaun not called out, and Patricia not grabbed me, I would have been hit by that car and gone hurling through space and my body would have then been on the way to the hospital or dead on impact.
I share this because too often we forget that the little things that are bothering us can take away our serenity and leave us feeling empty, frustrated and meaningless rather than grateful, alive and purposeful. If that had been my last day of life would I have felt complete and at peace with everyone and everything in my life? I questioned, did I leave things undone, unfinished or not manifested? Did I settle for less than I was meant to be, do or have? Was I kind and compassionate with others or was I self-centered and ego driven?
I feel like I have been given another opportunity at life. I have a chance to rewrite who I am and what I am here for. I have the liberty to love deeply, care positively and to make a difference in the lives of everybody I know. Since we never know when the angel of death will come to get us, we must live as though we only have today. No more wasting precious time in resentment, fear, self-pity and judgement. Instead I chose to live in gratitude, peace and harmony-these are my goals. I am here to let those I love know that I love them and to show up for what life brings, even if it is not quite what I ordered.
Perhaps I would add to my wall sign, start and end each day with a grateful heart.

Healing Begins on the Soul Level

By                             Expert Author Gary Wonning

We all have healing issues, regardless if they are physical, emotional, spiritual, financial or a myriad of issues.
Dealing with these issues is a primary reason we chose to reenter the earth's plane and reincarnate. It is the only dimension where we can settle issues from the past.
Our issues can be solved on other levels of existence, but it is a long and time consuming process, the best and quickest way to finally solve our challenges is to face up to them on the physical plane.
Jesus once said, "You must be born again." In my opinion what that actually means is that we must comprehend and face our challenges while in a physical body by connecting with our God Source while living and walking on planet earth.
Many times, and rightfully so, we seek healing with the help of others. We consult doctors and many other professionals in the medical field. While this is all well and good and a sensible path to follow, they cannot heal us unless we want to be healed. No amount of the medicine in the world will cure our ills if we resist, and by the same token, if we truly desire to be healed, we need no medicine.
The body will heal itself if given the proper nutrition and guidance from the soul. The trick is to discover that guidance.
Healing begins on the soul level.
The body is a mirror of the soul, it only follows directions it receives from the Super Conscious, or our Christ Consciousness.
Our body is an expert on following directions, it always does what it is told to do by our subconscious.
When we go within and heal our spiritual wounds, whatever they may be the body is healed, when we resort to drugs or other methods, we are on working on the symptoms, and not the disease.
Regretfully, it can be a little more difficult than that, our minds have been ingrained with false teachings for so long, it is often difficult to change the patterns we have developed over many lifetimes.
It is a work in process, when the subconscious wounds are healed, the physical being feels the relief as well.
To get on the path of healing, we need to increase our awareness and vibration and align ourselves with the higher levels of our consciousness through meditation and contemplation. It is only then we will see a permanent healing with no return of the symptoms.
There is no easy way out, there is no pill that will permanently heal us, no medicine will heal the wounds of our soul, only we can do that.
The rewards are many, and well worth the time and effort.
I have traversed the globe in search of truth, my truth, during which time I have had an opportunity to study with Aborigine elders, native American Indians, and some of the world's finest intuitives. All of this has lead me to better understand our world and all things therein contained.
I have created a blog: http://www.thefloridahoosier.com. And a website to share some of my adventures and knowledge as I see it.
I have written several books and am available for book signings and speaking engagements.

Soul Loss and Spirit Loss

By                      Expert Author Norman W. Wilson, Ph.D

Soul and what it is or is not has been a personal study for decades. To say IT, the soul, is that which is lends nothing to what the soul is; it abates the question. We are told that soul is the essence of that makes us human. Even the Christian Bible is not really clear about the soul. I wonder if it is possible to arrive at a working definition of soul without the involvement of religion. I believe such a definition is possible.
The soul which has a human body, at its most simplistic level, is energy. Even at the moment of conception, there is energy. Soul is that energy that is all-pervading. And going one step further, science reveals energy cannot be destroyed; hence, the soul survives the death of its body. Yet, my title suggests soul loss. Does that contradict the Second Law of Thermodynamics? Frankly, no!
Soul loss comes to us from ancient shamanic practices. In days gone by, the healer described the malaise suffered by an individual as soul loss, or a part of the soul being taken away, stolen, or kept by a loved one. Our ancient ancestors believed that a soul could get lost and because it had trouble finding its way back, the individual became ill. Additionally, an evil entity could steal a part of the soul; thus creating illness. A parent, especially a mother, might keep a part of her child's soul out of love when that child married, or went away and unknowingly create illness. The healer would travel to another realm to locate the wandering soul or a part of one and return it to the client. This was done by directly blowing into the client's mouth.
Spirit and soul are often interchanged. From my perspective, they are not the same. Unlike the soul, spirit is not all-pervading. It is totally individualized, that is, it refers to specific individuals. It is, of course, non-physical. For some, the spirit is the place of one's emotions which help define one's character. Whenever an individual experiences physical or emotional trauma he or she may suffer spirit loss. A parent who loses a child may experience spirit loss. Depression, whatever its cause, signals spirit loss as does anxiety. To help remedy this, the healer will offer certain herbals, suggest specific crystals and maybe a pouch with ground plant leaves to be worn around the neck.

Why Treating Symptoms Alone Won't Heal Discomfort, Pain or Illness

By                                     Expert Author Nicole Lawler

The human body is simply the vessel for emotional and spiritual beings that we are. And you cannot possibly heal your physical body alone from symptoms of pain, illness or disease, without also healing your mind and spirit. Balance; it's always about balance. Our well-being or dis-ease is a direct result of the flow of energy of each of these parts equally. This is why treating your symptoms of discomfort or pain doesn't work. You need to heal the part of you that created the symptom of discomfort in the first place.
Our physical bodies were designed to be self-correcting with numerous healing systems of checks and balances. The autonomic nervous system is just one of the systems in our body that shows us this. This is the system in our bodies that is responsible for control of the bodily functions not consciously directed, such as breathing, the heartbeat, and digestive processes. This system includes the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system.
The parasympathetic nervous system, also known as the rest and digest system, is what conserves energy as it slows the heart rate and increases intestinal and gland activity when necessary. The sympathetic nervous system's primary function is to stimulate the body's fight-or-flight response. Fight-or-flight is a physiological response to a perceived harmful even, attack or a threat to survival. This entire autonomic system's design helps prepare the body to cope with stress and threats, as well as returning the body to a resting state afterwards.
Bear in mind that times of the past generations were much simpler. Most families back then consisted of two parents, one of which was usually taking care of the children. Times of today are very different and the challenges of two working parents or in many cases, single parent families are many. Oftentimes, most of us run around scattered most of the time trying to get all of the necessary things accomplished in a day with no time for rest.
Due to this consistent stresses of life during these times, we are generally living most of our days within the sympathetic nervous system. Understand that our bodies were not meant to be in a constant state of fight-or-flight response system. When our bodies don't regularly return to a period of rest afterwards, it wreaks havoc on our organs and systems with all of the hormones being released on a constant basis. Hence, creating aches and pains, illness or even disease. This is our bodies way of telling us to stop, listen and slow down, of which, most of us rarely do.
This is only one of the physical systems of checks and balances our bodies were designed with. Now let's think about our emotions. When you live in a constant state of fight-or-flight, your emotions tend to get scattered and less than positive. The negative emotions of ongoing stress, depression, anxiety, constant excitement and even possible emotional pains of our past are all traumatic emotional energy.
The negative emotional energy also gets channeled into the physical body, showing too, as the aches and pains in our daily lives. This is our bodies way of trying to dispel this energy and in most cases, if you stop and listen to your body, these symptoms ease and your body recovers naturally. It's when you continue to ignore your body, that it creates longer lasting effects such as illness and disease.
So stop treating your symptoms of pain and listen to your body. Take the time to rest. We all need a reset button for ourselves every day to stay healthy. I'm not saying that you can't be Superman/woman and get it all done in a day, because you probably can and most likely do. Most of us have grown accustomed to this daily way of life, but at what cost? Is it worth your health? This is such a difficult lesson for most but think of your loved ones around you. Don't you want to be there for them in a healthy and balanced state for years to come? Because I'm pretty positive that they want that for both of you.
When your feeling imbalanced, not well, or have aches and pains, remember your body is trying to tell you something. And oftentimes, physical issues manifested from a less than positive emotional place. So treat your entire being with balance and rest to help you to determine the root cause, which you can then deal with and heal fully. Throwing medication at a symptom will simply mask it, while the core issue is still very much alive. Core issues grow and fester, and at a certain point, they make you stop and listen.
I'm living proof of that, having had thyroid cancer at the age of 37. My symptoms started when I was 27 but I didn't stop to listen to my body. I send you these healing tips from a place of love in the hopes that you may not have to go through a life altering disease like I did. Again, it's so important to understand that you cannot heal the whole of you, without healing each of the parts.
Take time to do things that are relaxing to you every day. Even if 15 minutes a day is all the time you can spare, aren't you worth it? The correct answer here is yes. Do something just for you, that you love, that makes you happy and whole. Balance and center with some quiet and calm time for you. You'll be amazed what a little you time can do for you. You will slowly but surly start to notice those aches and pains slowly fading away, or maybe you start sleeping better at night. Ah, the magic!

Laser Treatment For Skin Pigmentation & Hyperpigmentation

By                      Expert Author Mags Whyler

Skin pigmentation disorders affect the colour and tone of the skin. In our body we have pigment called melanin which decides the colour of our skin, hair and eyes. People with a darker skin tone will have more melanin in their skin cells than those with lighter skin, and if the skin cells become damaged or unhealthy, it will affect the melanin production, which in turn, will affect your skin.
Pigmentation problems include:
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Freckles
  • Sun spots
  • Liver spots
  • Age spots
Hyperpigmentation can happen for many reasons: over exposure to the sun, genetics, hormonal changes, medical conditions or as a result of burns, and it can also become more obvious as we get older, causing liver and age spots and if it's left untreated, it can worsen. Some pigmentation disorders just affect certain patches of skin, and while these patches aren't harmful, they can cause some distress.
Hyperpigmentation - If your body makes too much melanin, then parts of your skin might turn darker
Hypopigmentation - Too little melanin, or if the cells that produce pigment get damaged, then parts of your skin might turn lighter
Benefits of laser skin pigmentation treatment:
  • The procedure is safe - especially for the face, hands, neck and chest
  • There's no recovery time - so you can return to normal activities immediately
  • It's very effective - giving outstanding results every time
Advanced laser technology can help resolve skin pigmentation problems, resurfacing the top layers of the skin and causing sun damage and pigmentation to disappear, offering us a safe, effective and easy way to treat irregular pigmentation. Laser treatment works by damaging the top layers of the skin, forcing the collagen to kick in and start repairing the damage, so after a few weeks the skin will looker plumper and revitalised. The laser system resurfaces the skin and as the laser stimulates the collagen production, you'll see a continuous improvement in texture and smoothness of the skin over several months.
  • Treatment course - 2 treatments, each 4 weeks apart
  • Back to work - The next day
  • Anaesthetic - Local
  • Results - Permanent
Depending on the size of the affected area, the treatment sessions can take between 5 to 30 minutes. A single treatment session will get the desired result, but sometimes two treatments might be needed.
Most clients experience minimal discomfort, although some might experience a minor stinging sensation on the skin during the laser delivery, but a topical anaesthetic cream before the treatment starts will make it more comfortable. Afterwards, the skin on the treated areas will become darker, but this will flake off after a few days. You'll most likely be able to see an improvement in skin tone and texture as soon as the redness fades after the first treatment.
If you need help choosing a cosmetic procedure, we provide an extensive range of cosmetic procedures for the face and body: Botox, Vaser Lipo, Lip Augmentation, Dermal Fillers and many more treatments, to help create a younger, slimmer, more youthful looking you!

One Rule to Live Longer, Look Younger and Be Healthier

By                              Expert Author Vyara Bridgeman

My starting point for this article is this: there are no right models but some models are useful. In other words, nothing is hard and fast in science. Our understanding evolves all the time, and with that the world around us evolves as well. And I am not necessarily saying that evolving our understanding means we understand more. Sometime we simply get to a point where we realize that we don't understand anything. And those can be pivotal points as they make us go back to basics and start all over again.
So ageing, extending life and improving health (and looks!) at an old age... It seems science has gone right back to basics on this one. And there is one simple principle that emerges time and again with every study on longevity: eat less.
Now, there are two main ways to go about eating less. Suppose you settle on reducing your caloric intake down to X calories per day. (NB: I don't know how much X should be for you - that will depend on body weight, physical exertion, etc.) One way to eat those X calories daily would be to distribute them throughout the entire day over frequent but small portion meals. Conversely, you can eat the same amount of calories during an 8 hour window (i.e. eat fewer but bigger meals) and fast for 16 hours. The latter strategy is called intermittent fasting and the scientific literature at the moment says that that's the way to go, if you want to live longer, look better and feel healthier.
Thus, researchers from the University of Alabama conducted a study with a small group of obese men with prediabetes. They compared a form of intermittent fasting called "early time-restricted feeding," where all meals were fit into an early eight-hour period of the day (7 am to 3 pm), or spread out over 12 hours (between 7 am and 7 pm). After five weeks, the eight-hours group had dramatically lower insulin levels and significantly improved insulin sensitivity, as well as significantly lower blood pressure. And the best part - the eight-hours group also had significantly decreased appetite.
Another study compared the effect of consuming one afternoon meal per day for 8 weeks and reported 4.1% weight loss in comparison to an isocaloric diet consumed as three meals per day. One meal per day was also associated with reductions in fasting glucose, and improvements in LDL- and HDL-cholesterol.
I can go on citing other studies. Many of them are on rats, where intermittent fasting conclusively extends life and health-span by at least 10 percent (which, by the way, in rat world means many years). But I want to bring this discussion back to basics, which was my starting premise. Recall that in every religion some form of fasting is an important practice. You think that's for religious purposes per se? And you think it's a coincidence that all religions recommend incorporating some fasting regiment? I would think not. My guess is people have always intuitively known what's best for them. And this intuitive knowledge is reflected in religion texts which sort of act like manuals for wholesome living. Indeed, if you followed spiritual teachings (e.g. love unconditionally, forgive, be compassionate, let go and surrender, don't overeat, etc.), you might live longer and healthier (of course provided you threw away the institutional "religious" crap that got over-imposed to serve the ego purposes of the upper classes). Now science comes along and says the same thing that religions preached for centuries - intermittent fasting seems to trigger repair processes in the body which, in turn, increase health, improve looks, and extend life. Isn't that interesting!

The Hows and Whys of Hydration

By                        Expert Author Bonnie R Giller

Water is the elixir of life. You can survive for over a month without food, but a week without water is fatal. We take water for granted in First World countries; millions of people worldwide struggle every day for access to clean, fresh water.
Funny enough, many people here in the United States struggle to meet their suggested daily water intake. With access to sweetened sodas, energy drinks, and those delicious on-the-go frappuccinos, it's understandable if you're bored with "plain" water. There's no reason not to add a little flair to your water, especially if it means you'll stay hydrated.
The formula to staying hydrated isn't a complicated equation, but it does vary from person to person. It's important to replace any fluid that's lost throughout the day and night, and those variables can change drastically day-to-day and person-to-person. If you're exercising in extreme heat or humidity, you're going to lose fluid more rapidly than if you're chilling at the movies. The color of your urine is a good way to determine your hydration status. If your urine is pale and straw-colored, you're adequately hydrated. If it's dark, like the color of apple juice, you're low on fluids.
Sweat It Out
Dehydration can occur even if you're not sweating. In extreme heat and cold, your body loses fluid very quickly without sweating at all. You may not realize it, but you even sweat when you're swimming! Spending the day frolicking in the pool isn't a preventive measure. Athletes need to be even more aware of dehydration risks. Athletes tend to sweat more overall than people who aren't as physically fit, and they may push themselves longer and harder, causing even greater fluid losses.
Drink Up
Drinking is the ONLY way to rehydrate. Pouring water over your head or showering to cool off are only superficial - you need to actually drink the water for your body to replenish its stores.
Some early signs of dehydration include:
• Thirst
• Flushed skin
• Premature fatigue
• Increased body temperature
• Faster breathing and pulse rate
Try adding some flavor to your water to get you excited to drink it! You can create an at-home version of those expensive store-bought flavored waters for almost no cost!
Add any of the following to your water:
• A twist of citrus! Try lemon or lime or even a slice of orange. Throw in a few raspberries for extra flavor and color.
• Small pieces of fruit, like honeydew or pineapple.
• A slice of cucumber with a few gently crushed mint leaves ("bruising" them releases more flavor).
In Conclusion
Don't let dehydration slow you down this summer. Be sure to drink whenever you're thirsty. If you're engaged in physical activity in the heat, be sure to hydrate adequately before starting, take frequent hydration breaks to top off your fluid reserves, and continue to keep it up after you're done. Water doesn't have to be boring. Dress it up and drink it up!

5 Common Mistakes Yoga Practitioners Make

By           Expert Author Yogi Vipul

So you have decided to learn Yoga and meditation to improve your life. You have made one of the best decisions of your life. Yoga is an amazing philosophy that teaches you how to unite your body and mind with your soul. Yoga philosophy is originally given by an Indian sage called Patanjali who wrote Yoga Sutras. People start learning yoga with a lot of enthusiasm but somehow lose hope in the middle. Sometimes they make many mistakes, which hinder their progress in the spiritual path. Any yoga aspirant must be aware of certain basic things that are important for success in the spiritual path.
Anyone joining Yoga TTC must be aware of these most common myths in order to succeed in his daily practice.
We list down 5 common mistakes that Yoga practitioners should be aware of -
  1. Becoming too ambitious - It is quite common and natural to become overly ambitious and expect a lot of success right away. But this is actually a recipe for disaster. By becoming too zealous and ambitious, you tend to make huge expectations for yourself. By setting unrealistic expectations, you tend to become disappointed when you are unable to achieve them. Hence, any yoga aspirant must learn to stay realistic and avoid becoming too anxious while starting to learn Yoga.

  2. Setting Unrealistic Expectations - We naturally tend to set unrealistic expectations for ourselves, especially in the beginning. We tend to overestimate our progress and start expecting too much too early. This is only a recipe for disaster. When you are unable to meet expectations, you lose hope and become disappointed. Hence, you must always set realistic expectations for yourself in order to get success in your yogic path.

  3. Learn Only From Books - This is one of the most common mistakes that people make. Many people forget the importance of a true Guru and try to learn everything on their own. Although there isn't any problem in self-learning, learning only by self, and not from a guru can backfire. As you practice Yoga Asanas, you need expert help to get the postures right. Any wrong move can cause serious physical damage. Hence, in addition to self-study, you must always learn from an experienced Yoga teacher.

  4. Only Focus on Basic Asanas - Generally, people get stuck with the basic Asanas and not try to learn the more advanced Asanas. You must always learn Yoga in entirety, and not just get satisfied with the Asanas and postures. Yoga is a system that teaches a person to attain self-realization. Yoga is not only about learning body postures or asanas. Although Asanas is just one of the eight parts of Yoga, Yoga, essentially, is about achieving self-realization. By steady and detailed practice, one can gradually move up the spiritual ladder and attain enlightenment.

  5. Not Be Sincere in Your Practice - Many people learn yoga to start a business or other selfish reasons. Although the demand for yoga has increased substantially in the recent years, people must not lose the essence of Yoga. Yoga is not only about learning asanas and improving physical fitness. Actually, Yoga is about achieving self-realization.
Learning Yoga can be an exciting journey for you. Although learning yoga is not easy, it is totally worth its time and effort. However, a person must stay patient and honest during his practice and avoid becoming too complacent. Although you can learn through self-study or a Guru is really helpful in realizing the true benefits of Yoga.

So What's Up With The Third Eye?

By             Expert Author Rhonda Kitts

I get this question a lot! Almost very day actually! I wear my third eye sunglasses as often as I can for a real purpose. First of all, it's fun and fun is so very important. I'm able to exchange smiles with a lot of people throughout my day - to connect with them. With all the suffering I've been through it brings me great joy to be able to bring a smile to someone's face - a stranger, someone I will probably never have a chance to meet. Many people get it and they strike up a conversation with me about their experiences.
Many people don't understand and I'm so glad they feel comfortable enough to come up and ask me, "So, What's Up With the Third Eye?" The conversation begins and I'm able to plant some seeds and share a little bit about my story overcoming depression, anxiety, and twelve years on a cocktail of pharmaceuticals. And they begin to share their story, or their child's story, or their mother's story. The dialogue begins about depression. Something that unfortunately has become a taboo topic. It was my life, my world for nearly twenty years, and now it is my passion to teach people about our mind, body, spirit connection and our bodies' beautiful abilities to heal naturally.
Depression and Anxiety are not illnesses in and of themselves, but rather are side effects of the body's holistic imbalance. The imbalance can be caused by literally thousands of different reasons and healing comes with healing the causes, not treating the symptom of depression with a pill. Don't get me wrong - I support people's decisions to take pharmaceuticals when they need them. I certainly did. I was not in a position to heal myself at that time. I had two very sick children, mom responsibilities, and other life issues to deal with.
So back to the third eye... how does this relate to depression and anxiety? And is there such a thing? The third eye is our pineal gland and it is located in the center of our forehead a about halfway back inside the skull between the two hemispheres. It is responsible for melotonin and serotonin production. It is a gland that actually contains the same vitreous fluid as our other two eyes. "What? Why is this the first time I've heard about this?", you might be asking. I get it! I really didn't learn about this until I was in my early 40s. How could I not know about one of my body parts? Why wasn't I taught about this when I was learning about my little piggies and my head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes? I really felt a little jipped to learn about it so late in life. When I learned more about how keeping this gland healthy gave me so much power and connection to happiness, joy, and my life's purpose I knew I needed to learn more and teach my brothers and sisters about it.
Other cultures celebrate the pineal gland and they understand the power in it. The Buddhists and Hindus - they get it. They use it. They feed it. They honor it. Why is it such a big secret over here in the west? Or is it? Then I started noticing things - the symbol has been used everywhere - since the founding of our country, mostly in positive ways depicting the all knowing eye of God and the individual's ability to connect individually to that. I noticed the dollar bill and I searched the internet to find out who else knows about this beautiful organ we have when I've been in the dark about it for so long. It's been used by organizations such as the Illuminati, the French government, the US Government, the Free Masons, 911 memorials, Madonna's super bowl show, a New Year's Eve celebration in Sydney on the Harbor bridge, etc. etc.
Is the eye symbol good or evil? How does that relate to me? The pineal gland is a beautiful aspect of our physical anatomy that connects us to the beautiful aspect of our energetic or spiritual anatomy and spirituality as a whole. When we are born our third eye is healthy and activated, just like most of our body parts. I was not taught (like probably most of my readership) how to keep it healthy with good nutrition and exercise (third eye exercise, not jogging - LOL), so mine shriveled up and I didn't even know it was there.
There are many ways to build up your strength in your pineal gland, your third eye and I have written about that in other articles on my website. I hope you will follow me on my Facebook page to learn more about building up your health - mind, body and spirit!
Love you all! <3

One-Third of American Adults Take Medicines That Can Cause Depression

By

Our health depends a lot on what we eat and drink. However, the very medicines that we take on our physicians' advice to treat certain conditions might be the cause of some other serious ailments. A recent study has found that more than 37 percent of American adults use commonly prescribed medications that have depression as a likely side effect.
According to the study, more than 200 medicines are sold in the United States that can cause depression. Taking a combination of any of these medicines increases the susceptibility to depression. The list includes commonly used medicines like beta blockers (for blood pressure), proton pump inhibitors (for acid reflux), benzodiazepines (for anxiety), anticonvulsants (for epileptic seizures), ACE inhibitors (for managing hypertension) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen (for minor pains, fever, etc.).
Study author Mark Olfson, professor of psychiatry at the Columbia University, said the more these medicines are consumed, the higher the propensity to depression. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), involved 26,192 adult subjects who took part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey over five two-year cycles - 2005-2006 to 2013-2014.
The participants provided the list of all the medicines that they were taking at that time. Additionally, they also completed a depression questionnaire - Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) - which was based on questions related to mood, sleep, and appetite. It was found that nearly one in three persons was taking medications which had depression and suicidal ideation as serious side effects.
The study authors found that these people were more susceptible to depression than those who were not taking any medicines. It was also found that those taking three or more medicines were three times more prone to depression. Nearly 15 percent of the participants taking three or more medicines were found to be depressed. In comparison, only 5 percent of those who were not taking any medication were depressed, and only 7 percent of those taking only one medication were depressed.
Olfson said the study didn't direct which medicines caused depression. Instead, it showed if someone was already taking medicines, he/she was more likely to be depressed. He added that in determining the exact cause of depression, the researchers need to follow up the subjects from the beginning when they start taking medicine. The study findings suggest that patients should be more inquisitive about the medicines they are prescribed. They must ask their health care provider about the potential side effects of these medicines. If one starts a new medicine, it should be helpful to track changes in the self.
People who develop depressive symptoms without a history of depression should be more concerned as that could be a side effect of the medicines they are taking or could be an interaction. A person should also be able to speak to the doctor about stopping the medicine or reducing its dose, for example, a person taking a medicine for hypertension might be prescribed a reduced dose if he or she starts taking care of the diet, start exercising and limiting the salt intake.
Depression is treatable
Depression is a serious disability worldwide, particularly in the U.S. It can affect a person's physical and mental health, relationships, work or school performance and finances. Taking care of the self, living in the present moment, practicing yoga, meditation and mindfulness, eating well and doing some physical activity are some of the ways of managing depression. In addition, one should also seek treatment for long-term symptom resolution.

2 Ways Depression Descends

By          Expert Author Steve Wickham

Throughout the bouts of depression I've suffered, I have found on every occasion it descended like a storm cloud over my entire life.
To be clear, two of my significant depressions emanated through deep, dark life-changing grief. In another significant season it was as a result of an abusive relationship, and not being able to extricate myself from what I had experienced as a toxic situation. And my most recent bout, a few years ago now, was because of work that I didn't enjoy and wasn't good at, which indicated how important my work is for my mental health.
I have found depression descends two ways - acutely, without warning, and slowly and subtly over time. I've experienced both, the former many times and the latter enough to know.
The acute form is scary, and it leaves you anxious for just how subtle it creeps into the present moment collapsing your hope and crushing your self-esteem. I can recall times where things seemed okay, say in the morning when I woke, but by mid-morning the shroud of contempt would descend within an hour or even minutes. Or, I'd get through the day, and the still of evening would reveal my lonely inescapable reality. Instantly at these times I've felt like I've been drowning in a paradox of emotions - not able to control them, yet unable to feel them apart from the pain. Utterly untenable and unfathomable. It's probably the scariest thing I've ever experienced because it is completely an inside job, where your world feels like it is imploding, worse than dying. That's how it feels.
When depression descends gradually over the weeks or months, it is scary in a different way. It comes with a great deal of confusion, which is deeply disconcerting. It's like you're searching for answers and they just don't come. Something's wrong, you know it, but you can't do anything about it. I always found unexplainable bouts of either irritability or worthlessness (both at different times) was the tell-tale sign I was in the fog of the black dog. Sometimes I've seen in others unresolved grief that remains dormant within them, which turns them inside out, making them into who they weren't, but there is good news...
The good thing about depression symptoms is they indicate where we're at. I always found it more a relief to acknowledge: "Wow, yes, that's it; I'm depressed!" It was always a relief to acknowledge that I needed help. It was always a relief to my wife and children also when I put my hand up and said I need help.
The fact that we can say "I need help" of itself inspires hope, because it is an admission that we believe help is available. Having made such an admission, life and hope and purpose isn't far away, but of course, this is also dependent on other conditions. For very many people, there are chronic conditions that envelop them. For very many people their mental health is just part of the picture, and it becomes but an effect of other more intrinsic causes.

Memory Loss in Older Adults

By        Expert Author Johnson Emanuel

In recent times so much emphasis has been laid on staying healthy that it seems to be quite a sought after affair. Who doesn't want to stay active and healthy? But when it comes to older adults it could well be the need of the hour rather than a wishful desire. Staying active ensures not only a healthy body but a healthy brain also.
Exercise is known to be a good antidote of depression. It releases chemicals in the brain called endorphins, which boosts your mood. Studies have shown that exercise can make you happier, build stamina, and boost self-esteem.
In the elderly, the memory loss is associated with the shrinkage of a part of the brain, known as the hippocampus. Hippocampus is the part of the brain that assists in forming memories. Recent studies show that regular aerobic exercise may be helpful in slowing or even reversing the age-related memory loss in older adults. This happens as a result of an increase in the size of hippocampus resulting from exercise.
Researchers found that one year of moderate aerobic exercise, like walking, increased the volume of the hippocampus by almost 2%, which resulted in an effective reversal of the age-related shrinkage of the hippocampus by one to two years.
The shrinkage of the hippocampus is considered as inevitable in elderly age by the experts, but the brain is believed to be modifiable even at this stage by them. They are sure that even one year of moderate exercise can increase the six of the hippocampus.
Exercise and the Brain
In the study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers randomly chose 120 adults between the ages of 55 and 80 into one of two groups. One group followed an aerobic exercise program of walking around a track for 40 minutes a day, three days a week; the other group was assigned limited exercise restricted to stretching and toning exercises.
A year later the brain scans taken at the start of the study and those taken after a year showed that the right and left sides of the hippocampus increased by 2.12% and 1.97%, respectively, in the aerobic exercise group. However, on studying brain scans it was found that the right and left sides of the hippocampus decreased in volume in the other group by 1.40% and 1.43%, respectively.
Some other tests of spatial memory function also showed marked improvements in the aerobic exercise group associated with this increase in hippocampus volume. The researchers also found increases in several markers related to brain health, such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) which resulted in a corresponding increase with the increase in hippocampus volume.
The results of this case study are particularly interesting in the sense that they suggest that even modest amounts of exercise by older adults can lead to substantial improvements in memory and brain health. Such improvements can have important implications for the health of the elderly and the ever-expanding population of older adults worldwide."
