Working out is way that can give you a healthy life style. Many people work out to lose weight or gain muscle mass. Another type of diet to consider is the paleo diet. This diet allows you to eat animal protein. This diet is useful building lean muscle mass. You will have to stick to whole grain food. What you eat using dietary this system can work in your favor if you are trying to gain weight. The weight you will gain will be lean muscle. This dietary system will give you protein, healthy fats and carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables. You will be able to include chicken and fish in this diet. This system is based on what dietary experts think people used to eat before we started to plow the soil and lost our hunter and gatherer roots. Hence the term paleolithic diet.
If you are serious about building muscle consider the anabolic diet. This diet is a muscle-building diet and a weight loss dietary system. It alternates low carbohydrate food days with high carbohydrate food days.

Understanding the Difference Between Clinical Depression and Emotional Slump

Owing to celebrities like Michelle Williams, Kristen Bell, and Demi Lovato who have openly shared their experiences with depression, the latter is nowadays being discussed more openly than ever before. Yet, due to the stigma attached to mental illnesses, people are still scared of talking about the "issue" and do not know how to differentiate between the symptoms of a depression and a temporary emotional slump.
Given below are a few ways which can help one distinguish between a temporary depressive state and a form of this.
Understanding depression
The first thing that people need to understand is that depression is much more than an extended phase of intense sadness. According to Dr. Daniel G. Amen, an author and psychiatrist, depression, manifests as an outcome of biological issues in the brain and is an extremely complex illness with a set of challenging symptoms.
Dr. Brain Cassmassi, a psychiatrist and mental health consultant in Los Angles, shared that in order for an individual to be diagnosed with clinical depression, they need to meet certain criteria after undergoing a bout of sadness exceeding two weeks, for most part of the day, or every day. Some of these criteria include changes in appetite, changes in sleep pattern, fatigue, a sense of guilt or worthlessness, and a sense of apathy. In some cases, the individual may also be suicidal.
Clinical depression Vs temporary depression
According to Dr. Barbara Nosal, Ph. D., therapist, and chief clinical officer at Newport Academy, in the case of clinical depression, at least five symptoms typically persist for more than two weeks. On the other hand, if an individual is suffering from temporary depression, only two depressive symptoms would be present. Also, if an individual can still find enjoyment or pleasure in things and hobbies that made them happy in the past, it is not a sign of clinical depression. In the case of a clinical depression, it can be extremely challenging to derive enjoyment out of any kind of activity. Additionally, the afflicted individual also battles feelings of worthlessness or guilt.
Temporary episodes of depression usually have triggers that are easier to spot. Dr. Cassmassi elaborated that major episodes of depression, on the other hand, can occur without an easily identifiable trigger, especially for individuals with a history of repeated bouts of the mental disorder. Dr. Nosal shared that triggers such as social isolation, trauma as a result of abuse, major life changes, or conflicts in personal relationships can trigger clinical depression.
Dr. Cassmassi also stated that while passing thoughts of suicide are common to both situational and clinical depression, if anyone has more defined thoughts of suicide, it is a major sign of clinical depression that needs immediate medical intervention.
Treating clinical depression
Clinical depression can be treated with a combination of medicines and certain psychotherapies. The most effective therapies designed to help patients with clinical depression include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), motivational enhancement therapy (MET), and attachment-based family therapy (ABFT).
CBT helps patients identify self-defeating thoughts and judgments that make life more challenging. The therapy focuses on teaching the patient to think differently so that the negative thought process can be broken and replaced by a more positive one. DBT offers specific skills like emotional regulation and mindfulness, while MET helps in resolving any kind of initial resistance to treatment. ABFT, which is especially designed for adolescent depression, repairs the parent-child relationship and the family system. Dr. Cassmassi said that therapy is a good option even if someone is going through short-term depression. How Internalized Emotions Turn Into Physical Pain

We all internalize things, situations, or even people differently. You cannot pour from an empty cup. My husband has been continuously telling me this because it was such a difficult lesson for me. It's still a difficult less for me and most days I have to make a dedicated effort to remember it. Most of my life was spent putting the needs of others before my own. I was always proud of the fact that I cared so much about others, because in my mind, that meant that I was a good person and could look myself in the mirror every day and feel good about me.
Now lets look at the other side of the spectrum... looking at other viewpoints of a situation is so very difficult because most people only want to see one side of things. Some, because they feel so passionately about their side that they cannot be open enough to at least try to see another viewpoint. Others, because seeing another viewpoint would show another a very uncomfortable truth that they may not be ready to see.
Here's what I mean: I used to truly believe and be happy with who I was; taking care of and making sure everyone I loved was OK. Now, mind you, I'm not saying that this is not a lovely way to be because I believe it is. But, in taking care of everyone before myself, can you guess, who didn't get taken care of? While making sure everyone else was OK, all of my time, effort, money, and love was spent on another person. At the end of the day, the week, or even the month, I didn't make much deserved time for me. At the end of the day, I internalized it as me being not as important as everyone else in my life.
I've spoken a lot about the Law of Attraction and I believe this to be true. Our brains are much more powerful than we can even comprehend sometimes. It is your brain that can and will dictate what comes our way just by our thoughts. And not just our thoughts, but our perceptions. Just as like attracts like in thoughts, if you perceive these thoughts to be negative, your attracting more perceived "negativity" into your life.
Did you ever notice a situation unfold with two very different people and two very different, opposite reactions? Maybe one person reacted calm, cool, and collected; the other person would fly off the handle and create a snowball effect of negativity in their world that day. Here's an example: One person sitting in traffic that is seriously not moving, is very angry and gets themselves in a bad mood, and now for the rest of the day, that negativity snowballs and grows as other things negatively happening, such as the copier being broken when you get to work, or your food being cold when you get it. Meanwhile, the other person takes the stand still of the traffic and enjoys their alone time for a bit. This person understands that there is nothing they can do about it so maybe dancing and singing it out to their favorite song is just what they do. Taking a negative situation and putting a positive spin on it is so very difficult, but also very liberating.
It's really not about who in that situation is right and who is wrong, but for you to see that your brain can and does internalize everything. And your brain does also internalize things perceived by you as right or wrong. If we could just stop with the judgments of ourselves and others, and allow each experience we have in front of us to help us grow and become more grounded, we would then gain better health. Just as your brain attracts to you what you internalize, without your even realizing it, so does your body. Your body is no different. Your body gives you little signs that something is wrong on a daily basis also. Most people are so used to ignoring these signs, that they can't even see them now. When you internalize these negative emotions and keep them there, they sit in your body as aches and pains. Eventually after your body has been screaming at you for quite a bit, it begins creating disease.
Any aches, pains, or tightness in certain areas in the body, often have to do with the emotions your holding on to within yourself. This may sound very silly, but it's because most people are just not in touch with what goes on in their body's. I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that this is most certainly true as I've experienced it personally. It was through much counseling and reading and wanting to heal myself that I realized this to be true. Growing up in a home where the kids were to be seen and not heard, one might internalized my that their voice and opinion didn't matter. That same child may just learn to live quietly, and never have an opinion, for most of her life. It's that very child that would end up later in life with Thyroid Cancer.
Now some might choose to look at the right and the wrong in that situation, in judgment, but again, the judgment is not necessary, nor is it the point. Others may just choose to have a better understanding and seeing the bigger picture; that any negative emotion internalized, will breed aches, pains, and even disease if internalized long enough. Being that child I just talked about, I make a dedicated effort every day now, to speak my truth, no matter how I feel it will be received. I choose not to live in the right or wrong of a situation in judgment, but to learn the lesson and know my self worth. This is a difficult task, not just for me, but for many.
Here are some pains that are directly linked to emotions that we can acknowledge and help ourselves heal:
Head Pain
Often times, head pain signifies being overwhelmed. If you were to just acknowledge being overwhelmed and find a healthy, constructive way to move past it, you would easily move past it. Do you love to cook, write, dance, or paint? Do one of those things that you love and give back some much deserved time for your relaxation. Take some time for yourself to do some relaxing meditation. Let yourself know that you deserve it and your worth it!
Neck Pain
Physical symptoms of neck pain have to do with disc disease or osteoporosis. Whenever these symptoms appear, you may be holding on to an emotional fear of life or an insecurity. Maybe these emotions are helping you to be stubborn and inflexible. If this is something that you recognize, try to make a conscious effort to see the other side of a situation and understand that there is no right and wrong, only lessons that help you grow and be more grounded and healthy.
Shoulder Pain
Physical symptoms of shoulder pain can be telling you that you are holding the weight of the world on your shoulders, and not taking the time for self care. Shoulder pain may show up because it represents our personal ability to carry life's experience with joy and gratitude; not a burden. Try to learn the lesson and grow. Take the time for yourself and the well-being of your mind, body, and spirit!
Upper Back Pain
Upper back pain usually represents itself as feelings of lack of emotional support. The feelings of being unloved, or not loved enough show up and this is a reminder that we are in charge of our own happiness. We need to remember that at the end of the day, WE are responsible for our own happiness. Go and get what it is that you want, no matter how uncomfortable this may feel. Because you deserve at least that much and much much more!!
Middle Back Pain
Middle back pain usually represents itself as feelings of guilt or just plain being stuck in the past. Again, this is a reminder to see the situation, not placing guilt, or right and wrong, but for the growth of your own happiness in this moment.
Lower Back Pain
Physical symptoms of lower back pain may show as sciatica, pelvic disorders, kidney stones, or colon issues. These symptoms may appear when your are in fear or lack of financial support. Any pain in this area may keep you in a constant state of fear, because now you may think, "What if I can't work because of this?" See this snowball? It could be catastrophic if you are the person that will let it. Again, listen to your body, and find the source of this pain. Take care of you to do what needs to be done, so that you can release these emotions that are bringing your body pain.
Knee Pain
Knee pain shows up when we have an inability to bend or become inflexible on certain topics, feelings, or emotions. Again, remember there are two very different types of people in the world and three sides to every story; at the end of the day, none of these things truly matters. It doesn't matter who's right or wrong or even what has happened. Our happiness is what truly matters. It's only what we take and learn from these situations, and how we love ourselves in the end that will keep us healthy and whole.
Hip Pain
Hip pain is a sign of indecision; being afraid to make a major decision and move forward. First and foremost, think about the very worst possible thing that could happen if you make the wrong decision. You may need to start over. This may be something huge for some, but for others it's a great learning experience, because they were able to remain positive. Its all a matter of perception. Make it a great learning experience for you and learn to trust your gut. In most cases, you'll find that you had the correct answer the whole time, but didn't trust yourself enough to take the first step. Fear is one things that will keep us in a state of imbalance which is what creates disease. Love you enough to trust in you!
Ankle Pain
Ankle pain denotes emotions of inflexibility and guilt. This is a direct representation of the ability to receive or not receive pleasure. Again, sometimes we just simply need to remember how very important our happiness is. We need to remind ourselves daily to take the well deserved time for ourselves and our well-being.
I started out here with "You cannot pour from an empty cup!", and while I believe this to be true, I still have to work every day to remember this and try to continue to undue some of the negativity I've allowed to stay in me and in my body. This is a work in progress for myself to continuously move beyond my definition of each experience and use those experiences to move into a state of awareness, so that I may keep myself and my body grounded in the here and now and stay healthy. Old habits do indeed die hard, but all we can do is learn from experiences we've had and do the best we can for ourselves each and every day. Learn and work every day to keep your mind, body, and spirit in a state of balance! This is what keeps you healthy and whole~!

TMJ, EFT, and Stress

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. It is a joint that connects your skull and jaw, allowing movement of the jaw. There is one such joint on each side, right and left.
Tightness in the muscles that control the TMJ is almost always something that I have connected to stress, frustration, and/or anger. These emotions may be a total surprise to the sufferer, however, once the cause of causes are found, usually events in life, then using EFT to release the memory of these events from the jaw muscles can have a releasing effect. Slowly but surely, the muscles can start to relax, releasing the TMJ tension and its associated problems. Sometimes this happens in one magical session, but this is the exception to the rule.
Although the medical view is that the cause of TMJ disorder may be due to genetics, an injury, arthritis (wear-and-tear, caused in my opinion by too-tight jaw muscles, due to emotional factors causing teeth grinding), or simply an unknown mystery, time and time again, EFT practitioners find that when the associated emotional trauma is released, the condition is relieved or may even disappear altogether.
One such example reached my inbox recently. I have changed the wording, even though I have permission to publish, in order to protect my source. This is what the reader of my EFT-zine said, more or less: "I have had TMJ disorder for several years. It started with teeth grinding at night, when I had a very stressful job and could not turn my mind off at night. I also have adrenal exhaustion, fibromyalgia, and tummy problems. I am so dizzy with this ear congestion as a result of the TMJ problem. Please can you give me a free script to help?"
Clearly, with the adrenal exhaustion and other symptoms, there is a large element of stress that is somehow stuck in the body. With EFT, we call this stuck energy, and we release it with a mixture of releasing wording and special acupressure. If you are new to EFT, you can download a how-to manual from many a practitioner's website, along with provisos as to safety and best practices, so you can follow the suggestions in this article.
This is a case for working with an experienced EFT practitioner who can safely, gradually, and surely, release the stuck energy left in the body by all that job stress so many years ago. If this is not available to you, here is a script that I feel will be safe to use.
Setup: "Even though I have this stress from that job stored in my jaw muscles, I have held onto it for all those years, I want to let it go."
Reminder: "This job stress in my jaw muscles, and everything it represents".
Repeat the above for 15 minutes a day for 6 weeks, without the use of numbers. As you tap, if you feel tears, fear, anger, or sadness, then simply carry on tapping on all the points you like to use, over and over again, without words, until you feel calmer and more in control. Tap in this way for as long as you need to. Then congratulate yourself for having the courage to release this issue.
I assume you have already tapped for tension in the jaw, with no result. If you have not as yet, then also add the following daily procedure. First, assess the tension in your jaw on a scale of 10-0, where 10 is the highest and 0 is not there. Keep tapping the following until the tension reduces to the lowest number it can for that day. Repeat this daily procedure for 6 weeks. You can actually repeat it as many times a day as you want, and I only suggest the once a day in case you do not have the time to tap more.
Setup: "Even though I have this tension in my jaw, I just want to feel better".
Reminder: "This tension in my jaw".
TMJ disorder can be relieved, like many other conditions, by releasing the associated emotional stuckness. Try this protocol, give it 6 weeks, and see how you feel.

Why I Believe In Acupuncture?

My first exposure to acupuncture, was in the 1970's, when I observed, at a hospital, in New York City, a demonstration, of using acupuncture, as a primary anesthetic, instead of drugs, chemicals, gas, or any of the usual methods, This amazed me, because, there appeared to be no pain or discomfort, during the procedure, and was, obviously, somewhat safer, and non - invasive, than other approaches. This experience opened, my mind, to learn more about acupuncture, and how it might have benefits, in a variety of circumstances, and conditions. More than a decade, later, I was experience spasms, in my jaw, apparently, after oral surgery, because, I have a small mouth, and the stretching, created, a reaction or trisma. After a few days, we were in New York's, Chinatown, and I noticed, a sign, behind a Chinese Herb shop, for an acupuncturist, on the premises. I felt, I should try it, because I believed, either it would benefit me, or, at the very least, there would be, no detrimental, side - effects. Less than an hour later, my discomfort was permanently, relieved!
1. Shoulder/ knee/ lower back discomfort/ pain: After decades of athletics, and other use, I experienced significant shoulder pain and discomfort. I went to an Orthopedist, who stated, the cartilage, was reduced, and there was a degree of bone - on - bone, rubbing, etc. He explained the challenges of shoulder surgery, and stated, I might benefit from a cortisone shot. Unfortunately, the shot did not help, and the discomfort continued. Someone told me, about a great acupuncturist, in my town, and, so, I made an appointment. For the last several years, I have gone, approximately, fifteen, to twenty times, to this doctor, and, found a considerable amount of relief, from the treatments. While the underlying cause of the issue, including arthritis, and excess use, remained, the treatments appeared to reduce the inflammation, and, for two, to three weeks, at a time, are extremely beneficial, to me. When I've experienced discomfort/ pain, in my knees, and/ or lower back, these treatments have been quite helpful, etc.
2. Weight management: While I have not used acupuncture for weight management, I have come into contact, with many individuals, who have.
3. Stress/ tension: I have observed, numerous successful treatments, with those, using acupuncture, to relieve their stress, and tensions, in a non - invasive, non - drug, manner.
If we open, our minds, to the benefits of age - old, successful treatments, such as acupuncture, many illnesses and challenges, might be addressed, successfully, in a safe, reliable way. The more, we know, and examine, alternatives, the better off, we all might be, from a health - perspective!

How Prolonged Sitting Can Affect Us and What to Do About It

Text neck. Poor circulation. Fatigue. Arthritis. Depression and moodiness. Headaches. Tension across the tops of the shoulders. What do all these have in common? During my 33 years in chiropractic practice, they are all conditions and symptoms that patients tell me they have acquired from long periods of required sitting at jobs, school, and hobbies. There is a whole science called ergonomics which has evolved and addresses the problems and concerns that arise from the increased amount of sitting that we are exposed to. This article will discuss how prolonged sitting affects us and what we can do to mitigate the deleterious effects we suffer when we sit too long.
Historically, human beings have not had the opportunity or ability to sit around much. Until around 5000 years ago most human populations were nomadic. They walked to productive hunting areas to obtain food. Or they walked to productive grazing areas necessary for the cattle they raised. They didn't get much of a chance to sit in one place for very long.
About 5000 years ago human beings acquired the technology of farming. The Egyptians are credited with the first large-scale farming operations. While this did not require a nomadic lifestyle it also did not allow these folks to become couch potatoes. Anyone involved with farming knows it involves a lot of manual labor. Even during the more recent industrial age our predecessors were involved in very physical manual jobs.
So, when we think about it, mankind has only started sitting for long periods in the last 50 to 75 years. Before that, through all of human history, we were creatures of movement. Our bodies are evolved to walk extensively, stand fully erect, exercise large muscle groups by having to carry and lift objects necessary for our survival.
However, now with preschool, elementary school, high school, college and sedentary occupations, to say nothing of our use of computer and handheld technology devices, many of us sit more than proceeding generations could ever imagine.
It's no wonder that we suffer from maladies listed earlier in this article. Our great grandparents and great, great grandparents would probably be amazed that we go to health clubs and exercise classes in order to exert ourselves and work our muscles. Most likely they only wanted to come home from work and rest.
Yet, it looks like we are going to be creatures of a sedentary lifestyle for many generations to come. So, it will be necessary for us to take measures to counteract harmful physical effects of our relatively inactive style of living.
One area to be aware of is the ergonomic condition of our environment at work and home. It is important to have a proper chair, desk, and computer station. There is no silver bullet or one-size-fits-all recommendation for an ergonomically perfect situation. We are all different sizes and shapes. There are many different types of chairs we can use. Trial and error may be the best we can hope for in finding a good chair. Additionally, don't ignore seat cushions and padding which can make a mediocre chair into one that is ergonomically sound. Likewise, our desks and computer stations can almost certainly be improved by a little attention. Anything we can do to sit erectly, have our wrists and hands in a comfortable neutral position, have our lower backs supported in a stress-free posture and have our legs and feet in a properly supported way should be pursued.
It is certainly recommended that we also consider a workstation that allows us to stand. A quick Internet search for a variable or upright desk will yield many choices for this technology. Most of these are inexpensive and easy to install. In my practice I have suggested this for many of my patients in recent years. Those who have been able to follow my advice have been very positive and pleasantly satisfied with the improvements ergonomically achieved.
Of course, the old standby of getting up and taking a walk is probably the best antidote to prolong sitting. Whether it's a walk to the water cooler or a stroll at lunch time or a relaxed brisk walk after work, nothing beats walking to counteract harmful effects of a long day of sitting.
Take time to evaluate and assess your workstation and determine how you can physically, initiate appropriate movement and exercise into your everyday lifestyle. In the short and long-term these measures can make a huge difference in our health and mental behavior.

If You've Ever Given Up on Mind Training, Here's Why

I hear a lot of folk who dabble in meditation or self-hypnosis, then stop.
Even though it's a shame... I get it. It's not easy to stick with it.
But I'm here to encourage you anyway, because it's worth it. Mind training is one of the best things you can do with your time. That's a bold claim, I know, but I can make it because it makes everything else better.
It makes you smarter, sharper, happier and more focused.
This improves every part of your life, some more than others.
If you didn't get anything out of meditation, self-hypnosis or any other mind training practice, this won't help you. This advice is for anyone who tried it, felt great for a little while, then stopped.
Like any skill, it's a thrill at the start. You learn so much, so quickly.
But it takes effort to keep climbing that incline.
And eventually... you plateau.
Now, I'm not going to tell you to power through that plateau. That on the other side are greater improvements like you can't even imagine.
You already know that - and knowing that didn't help.
Here's what happened to most of you:
You started off knowing nothing.
Then you learn a simple technique or two, and suddenly you can do a lot.
It's exhilarating. You imagine what you'll be able to do with 50 or 100 techniques under your felt.
Except... it doesn't work that way. More techniques don't lead to more experience.
You stop progressing as fast.
It stops feeling as fresh, new and exciting.
So you start going through the motions.
And that, right there, is the killer. I'd put money on it. You start showing up to the sessions with the attitude of 'here are some techniques for me to follow', the techniques don't work like they used to...
It's easy to get bored or discouraged.
But there's another way to approach it.
Instead of thinking about the techniques as things to tick off, think about what the techniques do.
Think about what you get out of them.
Say your goal is inner balance, and the techniques give you that, then great. But if the techniques don't, then you've wasted your time... right?
Or you can approach each session with the intention to create inner balance.
The techniques are irrelevant. You could follow them, or you could not. So long as you cultivate inner balance, you're winning.
I remembered this recently after constructing an elaborate self-hypnosis sequence. Six days a week, it works beautifully and I access fantastic inner states.
That other day, though?
It feels like I'm just going through the motions.
So I stop, reset, and wonder how I can get what I want. Is this technique the best way?
Or is there some other way to do it?
While you're learning, you're not going to know many alternative techniques. But while you're learning, it's easy to continue with it.
By the time you plateau like this, it's because you know enough to mix it up.
So mix it up.
Going through the motions will stall you.
Having said that, knowing many techniques helps. That's why I describe over half a dozen ways to hypnotise yourself. If you get bored with one, move onto the next.
Soon you'll know enough self-hypnosis to simply enter a trance whenever you need.

Why Do We Lose Muscle Mass As We Age?

There are several reasons for any health issues that come along with age and muscle loss isn't the only one. Yes, our body slows down with age, for some sooner than others. That means there are things we don't have to do any longer, at least not every day. These are things our body is reacting to and brings along changes and issues. In retirement, for most people one of the most enjoyments of life is doing less or as little as possible and the body will react to this. This is one way of losing muscle and putting on weight, there are many others such as diet, nutrition, exercise, activities etc.
The diet is the first thing to question, is it lacking some of the things the body needs to build muscle? Minerals, which is most common our body can miss minerals without noticing anything for some time. Vitamins and protein, we know protein builds muscle. But, wait a minute, don't just rush of to the store for a protein shake, or some spirulina supplement which is worthless as a protein source.
Not only the Diet
Where does protein come from? It's not only the diet or exercise, although an important part of it. At an older age the body produces less or is harder for the body to make protein. Not having enough protein, we lose muscle mass that could mean the hair gets brittle, the immune system becomes sluggish, the bones become weaker and brittle subject to fracture and breakage, as well sagging of the skin. That's not all, lack of protein can bring on anxiety, depression, the sex drive suffers, these are just the major things that can happen. Yes, the diet like in many health issues has a lot to do with it. We assume that all the protein comes from the diet and what we eat, but that is not the only source of protein.
Proteins made by the body with the help of the right diet, so the body can make amino acids where the proteins come from. The other problem with age comes absorption or lack of it. It is not always the case that proteins made by the body from the diet used to build muscles. Because lack of absorption, protein can turn into excess glucose and not used only for muscles. The same can apply to any supplement pills you take; the absorption may only be a small percentage, and most is of no benefit. Unless a mixture of things you take together is right the body misses out.
For instance, the highest source of dietary protein is in whole eggs, do not remove the yolk like some trying to tell you, make sure to use whole - egg. Eggs have an AAU (Amino Acid Utilization) of 47 percent. As well as fish, meat, poultry, they all have an AAU content of about 32 percent. For the body to work at its best so it can produce enough protein to build muscles, the digestive enzymes must also function properly. If the digestive system works correctly the amino acids will go directly into the bloodstream. This than becomes the building block for hormones, enzymes, connecting tissues, bone and muscles. That's why the digestive function is so important for absorption, as well the right combination of the things we take. Otherwise all the things you have taken including the right food, instead making protein any extra amino acids get turned into sugar, which is not the outcome you want.

You do not have to fall apart as you get older - It is very possible to slow down or even hold back the ageing process. When we pass the age of 50, our bodies face a variety of anatomical and physiological changes. We can reverse or slow down these changes through regular physical activity.

Neuromuscular Changes

We are at our strongest and most powerful in our thirties. This remains constant up to our fifties.
After this, we lose around 10 oz of muscle mass every year. By around 70, men and women will face a 40% reduction in muscle mass. Sound scary?
This muscle loss is due partly to less production of testosterone. The loss of muscle also includes fast-twitch muscle fibres (muscles used for quick movement). The risk of falling in the elderly is linked to this combination of decreased fast-twitch muscle and overall muscle loss.
Connective tissue becomes less elastic with age too, which explains why many elderly people complain of muscle stiffness.
Resistance exercises for older people show sustained or increased muscle strength, elasticity and muscle mass.
Body Composition
As we get older, muscle mass reduces whilst body fat increases. As mentioned earlier, this decline in muscle mass is due to less production of testosterone. Because muscle uses more calories than fat, the combination of muscle loss and fat increase slows down your metabolic rate.
Aerobic and resistance training can increase the muscle mass. After resistance training, the muscles burn fat to re-build and strengthen themselves. This is where the fat loss occurs. Using these exercises stops the onset of weight gain in the form of fat.
Changes in diet can also enhance your body composition in the ageing process. Increased protein intake combined with reduced carbohydrates, will help maintain muscle mass and reduce body fat. Unless you reduce your calorie intake with age, you will naturally gain weight in the form of fat.
Body Posture
As we get older, our bodies weaken. Known as 'Kyphosis', the shoulders round and the head comes further forward.
Weight-bearing exercise or resistance training helps keep the skeletal and muscular system strong, thus preserving your back in the correct position for a good body posture.
Gait
This is the term used to describe how we walk. With age, the speed and stride length decreases. The pelvis can tilt and ankle movement can reduce.
  • Core strength training keeps the abdominals strong which stops the pelvic tilt.
  • Regular mobility exercises maintains good mobility in the ankles.
  • Moderate aerobic exercise sustains good stride length and frequency.
Being fit and strong into your 80's and beyond is very doable. The most sensible way to start a fitness program, especially if you are new to training, is to consult a professional gym instructor or personal trainer. They will assess your current health and fitness levels before setting up a training program that suits your needs and yours alone. As you gain in strength and fitness, your trainer will notch up your aerobic and resistance exercises.
