There's a Secret to Getting Yourself to Meditate

By   |   Expert Author Kevin Schoeninger
As a meditation teacher, I've heard countless students share their excuses for why they didn't meditate in the past week. They wanted to. They know it would be good for them. They just didn't do it. At least, not consistently.
Something always seems to get in the way: they need more sleep, the dog needs to be walked, the kids are up, they had to work late or had an early meeting, they felt too anxious, worried, or irritable... Meditation just didn't seem as important as other things they had to do. Yet, all those things they did didn't give them the peace of mind they desired.
Of course, meditation is about changing your relationship with all the events, worries, and anxieties in your life. It's a daily ritual-like eating, sleeping, and brushing your teeth-that creates a more relaxed, healthy, meaningful, and intentional way of living. It's a powerful practice to realize the deep peace of mind we all desire. So, what's the secret to moving from excuses to practice?
The answer is: you've got to have a strong "Why?"
Where do you find your Why?
The answer may surprise you.
The Secret is Body Awareness
Your body is not just a mechanical vehicle for carrying out all the activities in your life. It is a highly-sensitive bio-feedback system.
Your body can tell you what is good for you to eat and how much, when you need to rest, when you need to relax and have fun, when you need to get up and move, and when you need to be alone, have contact with others, be in nature, and spend time in meditation. It connects you to when, why, and how much to do anything. If you're paying attention.
In our context, it connects you to WHY you might want to meditate in the first place. At least it has the potential to do this-if you pay attention. Yet, how often do you pause and really pay attention to your body's signals? How often do you stop to sense what it is telling you?
Why aren't you doing this?
First off, we have a culture that encourages just the opposite. We are encouraged to focus outwardly rather than inwardly. We are encouraged to do as much as possible. We are encouraged to gather as many products and as much wealth, data, and sensory input from the external environment as we possibly can.
We are encouraged to react quickly and are discouraged from taking time for well-considered and deeply felt responses. We are conditioned to quick reactions and sound bites on news and social media. We are impatient with anything that takes time. We go, go, go, until we are too exhausted to continue.
Do you feel this exhaustion?
Yet, are you worried about what might happen if you stop? Are you worried you'll fall behind and be left out? At a certain point, you may decide you just don't want to live this way anymore. When you reach this point-or preferably long before that-take a moment to pay attention inside. Notice what all this thinking, doing, worry, accumulation, and stimulation is doing to you.
Is there another option?
Meditation Creates a New Way of Being
Meditation interrupts nonstop thinking and doing and gives your body a chance to relax deeply-something you may not even get to do in a restless sleep. Consciously relaxing, as you do in meditation, unwinds tension accumulated beneath your awareness in the past 24 hours as well as in the years of your life up to this point. It slowly dissolves the reactive mental-emotional patterns that drive you on the hamster wheel of nonstop activity. It quiets your mental chatter.
Now, when you first start to meditate, you may not notice this relaxing, quieting, and calming effect. You may become even more aware of how busy your mind is, how conflicting your emotions are, and how tense your body is. If you have mistreated your body through over-stress for a long period of time, initial moments of Body Awareness in meditation might not feel so great.
Or, you may feel little to nothing at all. All that thinking, doing, and pushing yourself to do things you feel you "have to" or "should" do may have cut you off from how you feel. You may have lost touch with your vital sensations and feelings. You may just feel bored without external stimulation keeping you distracted.
Yet, discomfort, boredom, or numbness, when you face them honestly, directly, gently, and without judgment, as you do in meditation, can alert you to just how much you need to activate another way of being.
If you heed this signal and take time to sit, breathe, and mindfully notice what's happening inside-the layers of stress will begin to unwind and your vital senses will reawaken. As you unwind, Body Awareness may tell you just how exhausted you are from the way you are going about your life.
As you pay close attention to what your body has to say, you might find that all those things you've been chasing after may not be as important as they seemed. You may discover you don't want to live on the human hamster wheel of incessant activity, worry, and anxiety any longer. You may be inspired to make new choices that reflect your soul's deeper desires.
Meditation beckons you to a more relaxed, healthy, meaningful, and intentional way of living-and your body will tell you just how important this is-if you pay attention.

How to Forget to Crave Junk Food

By    Expert Author William T Batten

Here's a nice side effect for you. Imagine you're reorganising your thoughts from the ground up. You are releasing old emotions and scars from your childhood. You're calmer, more focused and less rattled by nonsense. Energy - real energy, not caffeine adrenaline shakes - fills your entire body.
Nothing feels the same. Even boring, familiar things like queuing seem so much more interesting.
After a few days of enjoying this, you notice something intriguing:
Your cravings are gone. Or at least so small you can easily ignore them.
Whatever you vice - whether it's food, booze, smokes or whatever - it's less appealing. You're so focused on your new mental reality you barely noticed.
People would pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for that. You can stumble upon it as a free bonus.
This doesn't happen to everyone, it's true. But, if you meditate well enough... well, I like your odds.
Mindfulness is a key skill but you need to go beyond it. The best meditators incorporate mindfulness into every moment. But, unlike what others will tell you, there's more to meditation than observing your breath.
When you work with your mind - and I mean really work with it - useless thoughts fall away and you become more you.
Imagine everything you could be without everything holding you back.
Then imagine you became that while on the road to something greater.
It's not all unicorns and fairy floss, though. When it comes to your mind, nothing ever truly goes away. Some meditators replace one addiction with another. Many a brave soul has fallen off the path when they start craving sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll.
Others have fallen into a deep funk. Addictions reward the brain with dopamine and more. Change suppliers and it can throw you into a spin.
Or you can do the smart thing. If you're going to dismantle and reconstruct addictions, you might as well do it right.
I used to have "meditate" written on my to-do list. I don't need that anymore - I crave meditative trances something fierce. If I don't get a hit morning, lunch and night, it really throws me off.
Have I replaced one addiction with another?
Hell yeah I have. This has two advantages over typical cravings though:
Firstly, meditation is crazy good for you.
Secondly, this too shall pass. This is a familiar sight on my journey into my mind. The place beyond meditation addiction is a mind so rich and sharp you literally can't imagine it.
Think of it as growing pains. Or your mind's way of keeping you on track.
It raises one question, though...
How do you make sure you get the right cravings? How do you avoid your mood collapsing or your cravings exploding?
The answers lie in a different sort of meditation guide.
You could go in blind...
Or you could guide your mind even as it expands.
Your choice, padawan:

Here's Why You Don't NEED a Blog

By Alexandria K. Brown  Alexandria K. Brown

The word "blog" seems to be everywhere, and what an ugly word it is!
Short for "web log," a blog is a Web page made up of typically short, frequently updated postings that are listed chronologically. It's similar to an online journal. Different blog publishers have different types of content and objectives, just like e-zine publishers do. Content can vary greatly, but most blogs I see are used to share news about a certain business, project, person, or idea. I've also seen some with personal diaries, photos, mini-essays, and the like. Most blogs feature "here's what's on my mind" type entries written by only one person.

Are blogs the next big thing? Well, people seem to love talking about them. ("Do you have a blog? Have you blogged? Want to blog me?") They're popular, easy to update instantly, and you don't have to worry about sp^m filters eating you up.

Do you NEED a blog? Absolutely not. Blogs don't come close to the marketing power of an e-zine. They require your readers to come to YOU instead of your coming to them.

My friend John Reese has a great blog at MarketingSecrets.com, in which he reveals results to his online marketing tests and news about his programs. (I love his stuff.) He posts to his blog much more than he publishes his e-zine. He says it allows him to share thoughts, resources, ideas, and strategies more quickly and easily. (You can see what his blog looks like here.)
But honestly, I never think to go visit the blog, because I have to ... go visit it. Instead I faithfully read his e-zine that arrives right in my inbox.
You May Want to Start a Blog If...
  • You'd like your website to rank higher in the search engines.

  • You already have a large following of people who would like to keep up with your advice or programs more frequently than your e-zine allows.

  • Your business is in a field whose information changes very frequently, such as on a daily basis (e.g. stock trading).

  • You have project or personal matter you'd like to update everyone on at once. (For example, my friends who just had a baby post a blog with frequent updates on their little one's progress.)

  • You have so much infomation to share about a certain topic so often that it just won't work in your e-zine.
Free Tool Helps You Get Started
If you'd like to start a blog, check out www.Blogger.com. It offers a Web-based tool that helps you publish to the Web instantly, whenever the urge strikes you.
Just don't expect me to come read your blog! : )

SpamCheck Worth Checking Out

By Janet Roberts  Janet Roberts

Are you getting ready to send a newsletter? Don't do it until you run it through SpamCheck. It's free, and, being free, it comes with a sales pitch; nevertheless, it's a tool worth using.

On Tuesday, I got an early Christmas present from five Ezine-Tips readers, all of whom are affiliates for SiteSell.com, a Web- and email-marketing resource.

Each one sent me SpamCheck, an email tool that will run your newsletter through SpamAssassin, one of the better spam-trapping filters -- no sarcasm intended. Send your newsletter to the address, and in a few minutes, longer if lots of people are using the system, you'll get an automated answer showing how you scored.

Here's how it works: Paste your newsletter copy into the message field of your email message. Put TEST followed by your regular subject line in the subject field. Send it to the address below. (If you don't indicate TEST, SpamCheck will ignore the email.)

All the List-Universe newsletters I sent in as tests scored low enough not to be caught by most filters. This Ezine-Tip scored 2.8 points. I got penalized for "aggressive" language, having more than 76 characters in the copyright line at the end and "'Message-Id' was added by a relay."
(I've also been entertaining myself by sending in some of YOUR newsletters to see how SpamCheck rates them. A few need some real reworking, folks.)

Paul Crane, product manager for Site Build It! and affiliate programs for http://www.sitesell.com/, also said SiteSell's Five Pillars affiliates can "brand" the address to boost their referral sales.

Yes, the report includes a sales pitch for SiteSell services, but it also tells you what anti-spam rules your email triggered, how likely you will end up in a spam trap and some easy ways to fix problems. And, the sales message will be relevant for many email publishers.

Here's the address: spamcheck@sitesell.net

Alpha Lipoic Acid: Top 10 Benefits & Possible Side Effects

Reviewed by Dr. Frieda Wiley  PharmD

Antioxidants are nutrients that counteract the natural deterioration of cells. Raw, organic fruits and vegetables provide a wide array of antioxidants. Antioxidants are also present in herbs like astragalus root and Tibetan Rhodiola. In recent years, antioxidant supplements like CoQ10 and alpha lipoic acid (ALA) have gotten significant attention. In the case of ALA, it's no surprise, as ALA is an important nutrient that offers many positive health benefits. It promotes healthy aging, organ function, cardiovascular health, and brain and nervous system health. ALA also makes your body’s network of antioxidants stronger by boosting cellular production of other antioxidants and antioxidant enzymes. Here, we'll take an in-depth look at alpha lipoic acid and all that it has to offer.
